What happens this week

If your company's systems depend on integrations with the Federal Revenue Service, it's worth paying attention to this week's calendar.

(cite index="32-8">The Special Secretariat of the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service published Executive Declaratory Act (ADE) Cofis No. 14, of August 14, 2026, which changes the update schedule for the production environment of e-Financeira for the adoption of the alphanumeric CNPJ scheme. (cite index="35-1,35-2">With this change, the implementation originally planned in ADE Cofis No. 10/2026 was postponed by two weeks, and the alphanumeric CNPJ scheme will go into production on September 14, 2026.

The detailed schedule is as follows: (cite index="35-15,35-16,35-17,35-18">08/31/2026 was the final deadline for submitting information for the first half of 2026; from 09/01 to 09/11/2026 was the recommended period for adjustments and priority corrections according to the current rules; on 09/12 and 09/13/2026 the system will be unavailable for technical maintenance; and on 09/14/2026 the new technical changes and the alphanumeric CNPJ scheme go into production. In other words: today is literally the second day of the maintenance window that precedes the switchover.

Why this matters beyond e-Financeira

The alphanumeric CNPJ is not an isolated novelty of e-Financeira. (cite index="37-1">The Federal Revenue Service published Normative Instruction RFB No. 2,229/2024 in October 2024, determining that starting in July 2026, new CNPJ registrations would begin to include alphanumeric characters — letters from A to Z in addition to digits from 0 to 9. (cite index="37-12">The reason is practical: the current numeric system supports about 100 million combinations, and the new format solves this limit without increasing the size of the document.

(cite index="37-8,37-9,37-10">The deadline has passed and the first alphanumeric CNPJ has already been issued; the change does not affect existing CNPJs — if a company has a purely numeric CNPJ, it remains exactly as it is. The impact falls on validations, field masks, check digit calculation, and integrations that still assume that the CNPJ is composed only of numbers.

What has already changed in NF-e and NFC-e

In the ecosystem of the goods invoice, the technical adjustment has already been in effect for a few weeks. (cite index="34-1">Technical Note 2026.004 version 1.01 was published on June 8, 2026, promoting specific changes in the implementation of the Alphanumeric CNPJ in the NF-e and NFC-e ecosystem, postponing the start of homologation to up to June 15, 2026, and maintaining the planned production go-live. Likewise, (cite index="37-5">ENCAT Technical Note 2025.001 established that the SEFAZs' homologation environment would accept alphanumeric CNPJs starting April 6, 2026, and the production environment starting July 6, 2026 — both dates have already passed.

It's worth remembering that this technical shift did not come alone: it coincided with the broader schedule of the tax reform, in which the Selective Tax, IBS, and CBS fields also became mandatory in the NF-e in early August. For tax teams, this means two technical timelines running in parallel on the same fiscal document.

Checklist for today and tomorrow

Before the scheme goes into production in e-Financeira this Monday, it's worth confirming with the IT team and the systems provider:

  • Whether the CNPJ validation routines (mask, check digit, database searches) already accept letters in the 14 positions of the document;
  • Whether the e-Financeira, NF-e, NFC-e integrations and customer/supplier registrations have been tested with fictitious alphanumeric CNPJs;
  • Whether the ERP's and invoice issuer's technical support confirms compatibility with NT 2026.004 v.1.01 and with the updated Sped Portal schema;
  • Whether internal registration processes (sales, purchasing, legal) have already been notified that new CNPJs may contain letters from now on.

As always in this kind of technical switchover, the biggest risk is not the rule itself, but legacy systems that get stuck when faced with a format they never expected to receive.
