New DANFE layout: the Tax Reform arrives on paper (and in PDF)
After months dealing with XML, fields, and validation rules, the Consumption Tax Reform has just gained a visual chapter: the document that the consumer and the recipient actually see. In October 2026, the National NF-e Portal released version 1.00 of Technical Note 2026.010, which establishes the standards for the new printing layout of the Electronic Invoice Auxiliary Document, the DANFE model 55.
The technical note exists because the DANFE, until now, had no space designed for the new taxes. The change is part of the transition to the Consumption Tax Reform and aims to adapt the graphic representation on paper and PDF to the new taxes of the Brazilian tax system — CBS, IBS, and Selective Tax, established by Constitutional Amendment No. 132/2023 and regulated by Complementary Law No. 214/2025.
What changes in the printed layout
The major structural novelty is a new totals block. In the section dedicated to the invoice totals, right below the ICMS/IPI Total box, NT 2026.010 introduces the IBS/CBS/IS Total block, gathering the values of these three taxes into a single box.
Among the fields that now have visual representation are the CBS value (vCBS tag, ID W56), the IBS UF value (vIBSUF, W41), the IBS Municipality value (vIBSMun, W46), and the Selective Tax value (vIS, W33), in addition to specific fields for monophasic IBS and CBS transactions. The stated idea from the Revenue Service is to accommodate the display of the new taxes while preserving, as much as possible, the structure and visual identity of the current DANFE, without compromising readability for whoever receives the invoice.
When it takes effect
The published schedule points to December 1, 2026, for the production rollout of the new DANFE layout. This is a relatively short window for those who develop or maintain issuing systems, since it involves adjusting printing templates (thermal paper, A4, and PDF generation), not just the XML schema.
Another move from the same week: updated tax tables
Alongside NT 2026.010, a technical bulletin was published updating codes and indicators in the tables used by NF-e and NFC-e. Version 1.70 updates codes and indicators, including classifications related to transactions carried out by self-employed individuals, with availability expected in homologation and production by October 16, 2026. It's worth noting that the Revenue Service was explicit in stating that this is an additional technical bulletin, not a sixth technical note for NF-e and NFC-e — meaning it doesn't create new validation rules, but rather updates references that issuing systems consult.
What tax, accounting, and IT teams should check now
First, map whether the ERP and the tax issuer being used already account for the new IBS/CBS/IS Total block in the printing template, both for paper and PDF DANFE. Second, internally validate whether the IBS, CBS, and Selective Tax fields are already being correctly calculated and filled in the XML — there's no point adjusting the layout if the source values are wrong. Third, keep track of the code table update (version 1.70) by October 16, especially for companies dealing with self-employed transactions, to avoid discrepancies between what the system sends and what the official table expects.
It's worth remembering that this layout adjustment goes hand in hand with the rest of the package of Tax Reform technical notes underway in this second half of 2026 — all with the same goal of making the invoice clearly convey the composition of taxes that will replace the current model starting in 2027. Keeping the homologation and production schedule under control is no longer just the IT team's job: it's now a routine shared with the tax and accounting departments.
